One of ODP’s focus areas of work is “Environment”. To strengthen this focus area, every year ODP celebrates World Environment Day on June 5th in an innovate way. This year in 2014 – the emphasis of the Environment Day celebration was on providing awareness to school children under the theme “Raise your voice, not the sea level”, so that children build up love for nature and take active part in conserving natural resources for future generations. Awareness Programs were conducted in 17 places of 4 districts and more than 10,000 children took part in these programs.
The Culmination Program was held on 11.06.2014 at 11.00 am at ODP premises. 1500 men and women SHG members, farmers and students participated in the program.
Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Vazhapilly, Bishop of Mysore and the president of ODP presided over the function, Fr. Msg Marie Joseph Vice President of ODP, inaugurated the program. Dr. Karikalan, Deputy Conservator of Forests, was the chief guest; Mr. Basavaraj Assistant Forest Officer was the speaker on the occasion. Msgr. Rev. Fr. Desmond Rebello and Rev. Fr. William, board members of ODP, graced the occasion Mrs. Selvi, President of Mahilodaya Women Federation and Mr. Naghaiah, Secretary of GVSSMO men’s federation, were present for the program.
During the program saplings were planted at ODP premises by the chief guests. Awareness was also provided to the participants through awareness songs, dances and a skit on environment. A short report on ODP’s activities, especially with regard to Environment and Natural Resource Management was presented by Mrs. Sunitha, Women Empowerment Program Coordinator and Mr. Francis, CBO ARE Project Coordinator. All the participants took an oath to preserve the Environment through a Vaghdhana.
