COVID-19 Relief Initiative: Restoring Hope, Supporting Communities
The COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented global disruption, severely straining healthcare systems and destabilizing local economies. During the national lockdowns instituted across India to contain the virus, vulnerable populations bore the heaviest burden. Daily wage earners, domestic workers, widows, members of the transgender community, and unorganized laborers faced immediate loss of income, food insecurity, and widespread hardship.
In response to this crisis, Most Rev. Dr. K. A. William, Bishop of Mysore, spearheaded a comprehensive humanitarian response. In close collaboration with the Organization for the Development of People (ODP), Mysuru — and with the generous contributions of clergy, religious sisters, and donors — a wide-reaching relief operation was launched across the region.
Key Impact and Relief Operations
Emergency Food Assistance
- Daily Meal Distribution: Partnered with the Mysore City Corporation to serve 1,150 cooked meals daily for 31 consecutive days to marginalized individuals.
- Urban Grocery Support: Distributed 2,500 comprehensive food kits — containing essentials such as rice, wheat flour, lentils, cooking oil, sugar, tea, spices, hygiene products, and personal care items — across 35 underserved neighborhoods and slums in Mysuru.
- Rural Outreach: Provided 750 relief kits to vulnerable households across rural regions, including Doddarayapete, T. Narasipura, Hunsur, Maddur, and surrounding villages.
- Migrant Family Support: Supplied essential food grains and weather-resistant plastic sheeting for temporary shelters to 11 displaced migrant families from Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Public Health, Awareness & Prevention
- Preventative Education: Conducted health awareness sessions for over 5,000 individuals, promoting critical safety protocols such as proper mask usage, hand hygiene, and physical distancing.
- Mask Distribution: Distributed protective face masks directly to residents in high-need areas.
- Digital Health Integration: Enrolled 1,011 individuals in Chamarajanagar onto the Government of India's Aarogya Setu mobile application to improve access to essential health tracking and emergency services.
- Administrative Collaboration: Partnered with the Health Departments of Mysuru and Chamarajanagar to design educational literature, distribute informative pamphlets, and coordinate regional containment strategies.
Community Livelihoods & Empowerment
- Economic Support for Women: Coordinated with the District Administration, the Women and Child Welfare Department (Kodagu), and SBI-Chamarajanagar to engage Self-Help Group (SHG) members in mask production.
- Income Generation: SHG women stitched 13,500 face masks (8,000 in Kodagu and 5,500 in Chamarajanagar), providing sustainable earnings during severe economic distress.
