SPARSHA
Instilling hope. A unified campaign against cancer.
Cancer remains one of the most formidable global health challenges — the second leading cause of mortality worldwide. In India, nearly two new diagnoses occur every minute. These statistics are more than numbers; they represent lives, families, and communities under siege.
Awareness is the gap between a diagnosis and a future.
The most prevalent forms of cancer — breast, cervical, oral, lung, and colorectal — can often be managed effectively. Yet a lack of awareness remains the greatest barrier to recovery.
Stage at diagnosis, India
Every minute, in India
Nearly two new cancer diagnoses occur every minute across the country.
Cancer ranks as the second leading cause of mortality worldwide.
The psychological journey
A cancer diagnosis often triggers a profound sense of loss — of health, certainty, and the life once known. Many patients navigate depression, fuelled by misinformation and societal stigma.
Healing is as much emotional as it is physical. Transitioning from a state of fear to one of strength and positivity is vital — early detection is not just a medical milestone; it is a gateway to a future. ODP — Organization for the Development of People
The SPARSHA initiative
In strategic partnership with Caritas India – New Delhi, the Organization for the Development of People (ODP) and the Mysore Diocese have launched SPARSHA to instil hope and catalyse action.
Our objective is to transform four districts into cancer-aware, health-resilient regions.
- Mysore Anchor district
- Mandya Coverage area
- Kodagu Coverage area
- Chamarajanagar Coverage area
Four pillars of the campaign
Awareness & education
Eradicating the stigma surrounding cancer through community-wide literacy programs.
Preventative health
Organizing free health screening camps to catch the disease in its most treatable stages.
Sustainable lifestyles
Promoting kitchen gardens and organic nutrition to reduce environmental and dietary carcinogens.
Patient navigation
Establishing clear linkages between diagnosis, affordable treatment, and specialised healthcare providers.
Since 1984, ODP has stood as a pillar of development for the marginalized. By leveraging decades of experience in social upliftment, we are mobilizing a dedicated network of Volunteers and SPARSHA Ambassadors to reach the last mile of our community — offering professional counselling and psychosocial support that gives patients the emotional scaffolding needed to rebuild their lives.
Shaping a cancer-aware society
Knowledge is the most potent tool in the fight against cancer. Together, we are not just fighting a disease — we are instilling the hope necessary to overcome it.
